When i was younger a couple of my biggest dreams were to someday -
Be a teacher
Be a mom..
After i got married i had the opportunity to teach at our church/school down here and i really enjoyed it.. Hopefully someday after my littles are all grown up I'll get the chance to teach again...
And then as you already know i was extremely blessed when my dream came true over 5 yrs ago and i got to be a mom..

That's better!! :)
The thing i never dreamed of doing, though was being a mom and teacher combined.
The thought scared me!
Its easier to teach someone elses kid i thought!!
Well anyhow at the same time i was sort of excited.
The books have been ordered and delivered for a couple months already.
Last week Carter and I went on a School Shopping Date and got a couple needed school supplies.

It didn't take long to find the school supplies.. and then on to look at the toys... he could spend hrs there if'i'd let him!!
And then thanks to a 3 hr gestational diabetes sugar test , i had some free time to look over the teacher's books.
And i got really excited!!!
This will be fun i thought!!
For the first time i actually got really excited to be the teacher and the mom at the same time..:)

No we weren't driving down the road here.. :)
Our church school teaches 1st-12.. so this will be the only year that he'll be home before i ship him off to school.
I want to enjoy this last year of him home and make it fun if at all possible:)
We starting school a little early due to a little baby arriving in Oct.
That way we can take breaks when needed over that time..
We will both learn as we go i believe.. :)
First day of Kindergarten-
And little sister is going to be right there trying to learn with him!!

What curriculum are you using? My daughter doesn't turn 5 until the beginning of September, but I am planning to do Abeka kindergarten with her. I was an upper grade teacher, but the lower grades scare me. When the books arrived, I was excited, then I got really, really scared. I actually feel almost sick at the thought. I just don't feel capable of helping her learn to read. I don't plan to start for a month yet, though-- unless we get all the canning and cleaning done early. I plan to wait until she is actually 5. If she does well, we can send her to 1st grade next year (unless I love homeschooling so much!)and if she doesn't do well, she's young enough to wait another year...
ReplyDeleteI'm using Abeka as well... I know i never actualy taught a child to read either.. my favorite grades to teach are 2-5... :) I got excited when reading the teacher's manual and realized that they really do give some great ideas and basically tell you how to teach them!! I'm taking one day at a time and am not going to be afraid to slow him down if needed. I can't believe how Abeka pushes you through so fast! Good luck, hope it goes well for you(and her!)
DeleteThose school pages look familiar! Abeka has a way of teaching kids to read in such an effective way that all of a sudden they are reading and you are not sure when they even learned it. Yes, Abeka does push more than other curriculum's do, but if a kid starts out with that, they move right along with it, at least it seems that way with mine. Amber did not start with it, but Jenny did, and I can see a big difference in how each one relates to the required work.
DeleteYou will do fine!
Hello Alyssa, I thought I would let you know who this anonymous person is from Oxford, Pa (or maybe it comes through as Rising Sun, MD) that is following your blog. I am "Miss Kilmer". I do not facebook and found your blog through another blogger - gratitude journal and I am enjoying reading your blog. I just realized the other day when you blogged wedding pictures that your brother in law is Calvin Williams. Small world. Lois Ranck
